00:01 Welcome to the spoken tutorial on Custom Animation in LibreOffice Impress.
00:07 In this tutorial, we will learn

How to use custom animation in the slides in Impress.

00:16 This tutorial is recorded using

Ubuntu Linux OS version 18.04 and LibreOffice Suite version 6.3.5

00:29 Let's open our presentation Sample hyphen Impress dot odp.
00:35 This file has been provided to you in the Code files link on this tutorial page
00:41 Please download and extract the file. Make a copy and then use it for practicing
00:50 Let’s click on the thumbnail ‘Potential Alternatives’ from the Slides Pane.
00:56 This slide is now displayed on the Workspace.
01:00 Let’s learn how to use custom animation to make our presentation more attractive.
01:07 Close the Slides pane for better visibility
01:12 Move the cursor slowly on the first textbox and you will see a hand icon.
01:19 Now click the left mouse button.
01:23 Then go to the Sidebar and click on the icon named Animation.
01:29 First let’s learn how to decrease the width of the Sidebar section for a better view of the Workspace.
01:37 Notice the gray slider on the left side of the Animation section.
01:43 Move the cursor on it until the mouse turns into a double horizontal arrow.
01:50 Hold the left mouse button on the slider and drag it to the right side.
01:56 Adjust it as much as you require, without hiding any of the fields.
02:03 In the Animation section, there is an empty white box.
02:08 This box will display the animations which we add to the presentation for preview purposes.
02:16 Since we haven’t added any animations yet, this box appears blank.
02:22 Below the box, click on the Plus button named Add Effect.
02:27 This Add Effect button allows us to set animation options.
02:32 It enables Category and other fields below the Add Effect button.
02:38 In the Category drop-down, the option Entrance is selected by default.
02:44 Entrance option controls the way the item appears on the Slide show.
02:50 Click on this drop-down.
02:53 Here we can see many other options that control the way the item appears on the Slide show.
03:01 I will keep the option Entrance.
03:05 Now, in the Effect list, scroll down and choose the Diagonal Squares effect.
03:12 Notice that the preview of the selected transition effect is displayed in the Workspace.
03:19 This is because the Automatic Preview checkbox is selected by default in the section.
03:26 If not, go to the bottom of the section and check the Automatic Preview option.
03:33 Alternatively click on the Play button to see the preview.
03:38 In the Animation box, notice that the first animation has been added.
03:44 Now in the same slide, select the second textbox to the right, as explained earlier.
03:52 Under the Animation section, click on the Add Effect button.
03:58 Keep the Category as Entrance.
04:01 Under Effect, scroll down and select the Wedge effect.
04:06 Notice that the preview of the selected transition effect is displayed in the Workspace.
04:13 Notice that this animation has also been added to the Animation box.
04:19 Next, select the third Body textbox.
04:23 In the Animation section, once again click on the Add Effect button.
04:29 Notice that subsections below the Add Effect button are not enabled.
04:35 This is because the selected textbox has two sentences.
04:41 In such case, by default ‘Appear’ effect is applied to the textboxes
04:48 If you still wish to apply the animation to such a textbox, you can apply it individually.
04:55 In the Animation box, click on the ‘Arrow to the right’ icon next to the third animation.
05:03 Notice that the third animation is split into two individual animations of two sentences.
05:11 By selecting the individual lines, we can set animations for each one of them.
05:17 We can see that the Effect list and other options are enabled.
05:23 Choose the animation effect as per your choice.
05:28 We will keep the default effect ‘Appear’ for both sentences of the third textbox.
05:35 Click on the ‘Down arrow’ icon next to the third animation to hide the individual lines
05:42 Notice that the animations in the list, are in the order in which we have created them.
05:50 We can also select more than one animation to preview.
05:55 To do this, hold down the Control key on the keyboard while selecting all the animations.
06:02 Then click on the Play button.
06:05 Notice that the preview of all the animations we selected are played in the Workspace.
06:12 In the Animation box, let’s select the third animation.
06:17 Below the Animation box, notice arrow buttons named Move Up and Move Down.
06:24 Using these buttons, we can change the order of the animation, if we want to.
06:30 Each animation comes with certain default properties.
06:35 Let’s look at the default properties for the animation and learn how to modify them.
06:42 In the Animation box, double-click on the first animation in the list.
06:48 The Effect Options dialog box appears on the screen.
06:53 By default the Effects tab is selected.
06:57 In the Settings section, click on the Direction drop-down and select From right to top option.
07:05 This has the effect of starting the animation from the right and moving to the top as it progresses.
07:13 Click the OK button to close the dialog box.
07:17 Click on the Play button to see the change in the animation.
07:24 Go to the Animation box once again and double-click on the first animation.
07:31 In the Effect Options dialog box, click on the Timing tab.
07:37 Go to the Delay field and press the Plus button to increase the delay time to 1.0 second.
07:46 This has the effect of starting the animation after one second.
07:52 Click the OK button to close the dialog box.
07:56 We can also set the delay and directions in the Animation section.
08:02 Now click on the Play button.
08:05 We observe the effect of the one second delay which we made in the animation.
08:11 Go to the Animation box and double-click on the second animation in the list.
08:18 In the Effect Options dialog box, click on the Text Animation tab.
08:24 Text Animation tab offers various options to animate the text.
08:30 Click on Group text drop-down.
08:34 Select ‘By 1st level paragraphs’ option if it is not already selected by default.
08:42 Select the checkbox of Automatically after.
08:46 Then in the value field, increase the seconds to 2.
08:51 This choice displays each item from a bulleted or numbered list and its animation separately.
08:59 Use this option when you want to thoroughly discuss one item point, before moving on to the next.
09:07 Click the OK button to close the dialog box.
09:12 Now click on the Play button.

We observe the effect of the two seconds delay which we made in the animation.

09:22 Finally, let’s view all three animation effects at once.
09:28 Go to the box and hold down the Control key while selecting all three animations in the list.
09:36 Go to the bottom and click on the Play button.

You can see all the three animation effects that we have made.

09:45 Close the Animation section.
09:48 Lets open the Slides pane
09:53 Animation is a good way to break the monotony of a presentation and Helps to illustrate certain item points clearly
10:04 However, be careful not to overdo it!
10:08 Too much animation will take the attention of the audience away from the subject under discussion.
10:15 All the animations effectively show up in the Slide Show Creation tutorial in this series.
10:22 Let us save all these changes for future use and then close the presentation file.
10:29 With this, we have come to the end of this spoken tutorial.

Let us summarize.

10:36 In this tutorial, we learnt: How to use custom animation in the slides in Impress.
