Slide: Introduction Welcome to the spoken tutorial on Installing Ubuntu Linux OS in a VirtualBox.
Slide: Learning Objective

In this tutorial we will learn:
  • How to install Ubuntu Linux 16.04 in a VirtualBox on a Windows base machine.
Slide: System Requirements This tutorial is recorded using
  • Windows OS version 10
  • VirtualBox version 5.2.18
  • Ubuntu Linux 16.04 OS

Before we begin, please make sure that you are connected to the Internet.

Slide: System requirements for VirtualBox To install an OS inside a VirtualBox, the base machine should the following configuration.
  • i3 processor or higher
  • RAM 4GB or higher
  • Hard disk free space 50GB or more and
  • Virtualization should be enabled on BIOS

This will ensure that the VirtualBox will work smoothly.

Only Narration Before we start installing, kindly cross-check whether the System type is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Start -> About your PC

Highlight System type

To do so, first go to the search bar next to the Start menu

Type About your PC

Select About your PC.

Under System type, we can see whether we are running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows.

Here in my case it is 64-bit Windows.

Slide: Download Ubuntu 16.04
  • Based on your System type, download the suitable Ubuntu Linux 16.04 ISO from this link: http://releases.ubuntu.com/16.04/
  • For 32-bit it will be ubuntu-16.04.5-desktop-i386.iso
  • For 64-bit it will be ubuntu-16.04.5-desktop-amd64.iso
Only Narration As mentioned earlier, my Windows System type is 64-bit.

Hence I have downloaded the ubuntu-16.04.5-desktop-amd64.iso file for this demonstration.

Show Desktop

Open VirtualBox

First we will learn how to create a virtual machine inside the VirtualBox.

On the Desktop, double-click on the VirtualBox icon to launch it.

Click on New At the top of the VirtualBox window, locate the blue color icon New and click on it.
Name: Ubuntu In the Create Virtual Machine window which opens, we can see the page Name and Operating system.

Under the Name text box, type the name you wish to give.

I will type Ubuntu.

Type -> Linux Then under the dropdown Type, select Linux.
Version -> Ubuntu (64-bit) From the dropdown Version, I will select Ubuntu (64-bit).

In case your base machine is 32-bit, then select Ubuntu (32-bit) from the dropdown.

Click on Next And click on the Next button at the bottom of the window.
The next page is Memory size.

Here we allocate the size of the RAM for the virtual machine.

Point to the slider and text box Use the slider or the text box to allocate the size for the RAM.
In textbox type, 4048

Since the unit says MB, I will type 4048 in the textbox.

This will allocate 4GB of RAM to this virtual machine.

If the system memory of the base machine is only 4GB, then allocate 2GB for the virtual machine.

Click on Next Now click on the Next button at the bottom of the window.
On the Hard disk page, we have to decide which type of virtual hard disk we are going to use.
Point to Create a virtual hard disk now I’m creating a new virtual machine, so I will select Create a virtual hard disk now.

This option could be already selected by default for you.

Click on Next Click on the Create button at the bottom.
Select VDI >> click on Next In the Hard disk file type, select VDI (Virtual Disk Image)

And click on the Next button at the bottom of the window

Point both options In the next page Storage on physical hard disk, we have to decide how our hard disk storage has to be.

There are two options here.

Highlight Dynamically allocated Dynamically allocated option will expand the hard disk storage based on the usage.
Highlight Fixed size >> select Fixed size Fixed Size will allocate the size which we define.

I will choose Fixed size.

Click Next Now click on the Next button to proceed.
The next page File location and size, is to allocate the hard disk size.
Point to Ubuntu Here you can see the name Ubuntu which we gave earlier.
Point to the folder icon Also to the right we can see a folder icon.

If you wish to save this Virtual Disk Image in another location, click on this icon and proceed.

I’m skipping this part for this demonstration.

Point to the slider and textbox Next use the slider or the textbox to allocate the hard disk size.
Change 10GB to 20GB The recommended size is 10GB, but I will change it to 20GB.
Click on Create Then click on the Create button at the bottom.
Only Narration This will create a new Virtual Machine base with the details we have provided so far.

This may take some time to create.

Point to the newly created VM “Ubuntu” Once the Virtual Machine is created, we can see it on the left side side.

Here is the Virtual Machine, Ubuntu which we created just now.

This indicates that we have successfully created the Virtual Machine that is the VM.

Point to Try Ubuntu and Install Ubuntu. At the center we can see two options, Try Ubuntu and Install Ubuntu.
Point to Try Ubuntu If you wish to try the look and feel of Ubuntu before installing, click on Try Ubuntu.
Point to Install Ubuntu.

Click on Install Ubuntu.

Else directly click on Install Ubuntu.

I will click on the option Install Ubuntu.

Point to respective options The next page shows two options.

Downloading update while installing Ubuntu

And Installing some third-party software during the installation

Click on Continue button I will skip these and click on Continue button at the bottom
Only Narration The third page is one of the important steps during Ubuntu Linux installation.
