  • Ubuntu Linux OS version 16.04
  • Grace version 5.1.25

  • A working internet connection to download Grace.

Let us now install Grace program in Ubuntu Linux OS 16.04.

This is the official website of Grace.

Cursor on Ubuntu Linux Interface. First I will demonstrate to install Grace using the terminal.

Show the Ubuntu Desktop.

Internet connectivity is required to install the software.
Press the windows key on keyboard Press the windows key on keyboard.
Type terminal in search form

Press enter

Type terminal in the search box that appears and press Enter.
Point to theTerminal. A terminal window opens.
Type sudo apt-get update >>

pressEnter

At the prompt, type sudo space apt hyphen get space update and press Enter
Enter sudo password >> press Enter.

Point to installing packages.

If prompted for sudo password, type the password and press Enter

This step updates the available packages from the Internet sources. This process takes a few seconds to complete.

Ctrl-L I will clear the terminal.
Type sudo apt-get install grace >>

press Enter.

Next, type sudo space apt-get space install space grace.

Press Enter.

If prompted, enter y

Point to the installation process steps.

This process takes sometime to complete and installs Grace in your computer.
The process may exit without installing grace with lock error.

Then, see the installation sheet for further help.

Ctrl-L I will clear the terminal.
At the prompt, type xmgrace >> press Enter.

Point to the Grace window.

To open Grace using the terminal,

at prompt type xmgrace and press Enter. Grace window opens.

Click on the X button to close the window. Click on the X button on the top-left corner to close the window.

Press the windows key on keyboard.

Now I will show how to open Grace using search your computer option.

Press the windows key on the keyboard.

Type grace in the search box >> Press Enter. In the search box, that appears, type grace and press Enter.

This will open the Grace program.

Point to the graph panel.

Grace opens with an empty graph panel.

First, we will learn how to resize the graph panel.

Point to the solid squares at the corners.

Drag the scroll bar. Show bottom right corner or graph panel

There are four small solid squares at the corners of the graph panel.

Using the scroll bars, go to the bottom right corner of the graph.

Hover mouse over corner. Double click on the small black square on the bottom right corner.

You may choose any of the corner squares to resize.

Double click and observe. Now the graph can be resized.

The border lines may or may not be visible now.

Click and drag the cursor to top left. To resize drag and place the cursor at the desired position.
Left click to fix the plot size. Now left click, to fix the size of the graph panel.
Adjust scroll bar to see full graph panel. I will also adjust the scroll bars to see the full graph panel.

Download File to Practise

To plot the graph, download the line.txt' file.

The file is provided in the code files link of this tutorial. Extract the file and save it on the Desktop.

Go to Desktop and show the file. I have already downloaded and saved it on the Desktop.
Double click to open the file.

Point to the # line. Hover mouse over header.

Double click to open the file in a text editor.

First row starts with a hash and is a comment line. This is the data header.

Hover mouse over the columns.

Point to the columns.

Notice the two column data format.

First column is x data and second column is y data. In this data file values are tab separated.

Close the file Close the file and go back to Grace window.

Next, we will load the data on Grace interface to plot a graph.

Hover mouse over limits.

Notice that, the axis limits are from zero to one for both axes.

Next, let’s load the data file to make an XY plot.

Click on Data tab > Import > ASCII Click on Data tab, Import and select ASCII format.

A Grace: Read sets dialogue box opens.

Change filter to .txt >> Press Enter.

Point to the * .txt files.

In the Filter input box change *.dat to *.txt and press Enter.

This will show the list of directories and files containing txt extension.

Change directory to Desktop. From Directories option, select Desktop folder.
Select line.txt file Select the file line.txt.
Select load set to single set We will keep Load as Single Set .
Select Set Type as XY Select Set Type as XY.
Point to Data Source as Disk By default, Data Source is set to Disk.
Select Auto Scale on read for XY By default, Auto Scale on read is set to XY.

The range of X and Y axes automatically adjusts to lower and higher values of data.

Click on the Ok button. Click on the Ok button to load the data.
Click Cancel to close the Window. Click on Cancel to close the dialogue box.
Point at plot area to show straight line We can see a graph representing the data.
Hover mouse to limits of x-y axes. X and Y limits on the graph have changed from 0 to 10.
Click on File >> Save.

Point to the dialogue box.

Let us save the file.

Click on File and select Save. Grace:Save project dialogue box opens.

Point to *.agr extension Dot agr is the preferred extension for grace plot.
Change directory, to Desktop.

Type file name line.agr

I will choose Desktop to save the file.

In the Selection text box, type file name as line dot agr

Click OK button. Click on the OK button to save the project.
Click on File exit To exit Grace, click on File, Exit or press control q on keyboard.
