Code Files

  • Files used in this tutorial are provided in the Code files link.
  • Please download and extract the files.
  • Make a copy and then use them while practising.
Show the input files in the Videos folder. I have saved the input files provided with this tutorial in the Videos folder.

The ELAN eaf project file was created with the video and the audio files.

Show the ELAN interface. I have already opened the ELAN interface.
Go to File, Open. Go to File, Open to open the provided input project file.
Select the annotate.eaf file and Click on Open the project. Select the annotate.eaf file and Click on Open to open the project.

It is easier to transcribe and annotate large videos while playing the video.

Click on Options, Segmentation Mode. It is done in segmentation mode.

Click on Options, and choose Segmentation Mode.

Cursor on the top right panel. The options in the top right panels change.

The interface is now in Segmentation mode.

Cursor next to Two keystrokes per annotation. In the Segmentation tab, Two keystrokes per annotation is selected.
Play the video from any position. I will play the video.
Add text annotation to start segmentation. To start a segment to transcribe, press the Enter key on the keyboard.
To mark the end of segmentation, press the Enter key again.
Press Control+Z twice. I will press Control-Z twice to undo the demonstrated segmentation.
Show active English tier. During segmentation, I will not narrate for clarity.

Make sure the English Tier is activated.

Cursor on the waveform of the audio, move to the start of the audio. I will use the audio waveform as a guide for segmentation.
Play the audio.

Make 4 sentence segments.

Move to the start of the video, and make 4 segments for the first 4 sentences.

Let’s play the audio and practice.

Make segments for the first four lines. Audio from the waveform is heard.
No narration is present.
Stop the audio. Add annotation Stop the audio.

Now we have the four segments.

Cursor on the options on the top right panel. Notice the many options on the top right panel.

They are different ways to create segments for user convenience.

Cursor on One keystroke for annotation, fixed, duration. If this option is chosen, fixed width segments are created.

Users may specify the duration of each segment.

Cursor on One keystroke for annotation, press to mark start, release to mark end. Scroll down and notice more options.

In this option, press, hold and later release the Enter key to create a segment.

Cursor on the segments. The segments may not be in the exact position.

We may have pressed the Enter key a bit earlier or later.

Place the cursor on a segment, click, hold and drag a little. To move the segment, place the cursor on it.

Notice the segment turn green and the cursor shows a palm sign.

Click, hold and drag as desired to reposition it.

Place cursor on the end and drag to resize. To adjust the limits, place the cursor on the end.

Drag the end to desired position to lengthen or shorten the segment.

Click on >F and <F icons and show the video move by frame. For finer adjustment match it to the video frame.

This can be done using the icons to move the video by frame.

This aids the user to determine the exact time of start and end for annotation.

Show >1 and <1 icon to go through the video. We can also go forward or backward by one second.

Adjust to match the segment length as desired.

Right click to open a context menu.

Show the options.

Place the cursor on any segment and right click to open a context menu.

Notice the options to merge, split, delete or modify the annotation regions.

Choose Font size and show the size options.

Font size can be adjusted using the Font size option from the context menu.

I will not change it now.

Pause this video and practice to adjust the segment position.
Click on Options and choose Transcription Mode. Next, click on Options and choose Transcription Mode.
Cursor on Transcription Mode Settings. For the very first time, a Transcription Mode Setting window is seen.
Click on the pulldown for Select Column Type.

I will select the English Tier.

Click on the pulldown for Select Column Type.

I will select the English Tier.

Click on Apply. You may change the Font Size if you desire.

Click on Apply to accept the change.

Cursor on the interface. The settings window closes and the Transcription mode of the interface is seen.
Cursor on the right panel rows. In each row on the right, we can type the annotation.
Cursor on the left panel. Their corresponding waveform and video is seen on the left side.
Cursor on the three play, play selection and clear selection icons. Only play, play selected and clear selection icons are seen for the player.
Click on the play icon and listen the audio. When you click on the first row, the selection is played.
Type, Let’s add a linking line between the two summary nodes.

Audio waveform seen in the left panel gets played.

Let’s add the annotation for it.

Only the selected segment is visible in the left panel.

Annotate: Highlight Loop Mode. To hear the audio in a loop, check the box for Loop Mode and play again.
Click on the second row.

The audio in the left panel is heard.

Next, click on the second row.
check the Loop Mode, play the audio and type the annotation. The second line gets played.

I will check the Loop Mode, play the audio and type the annotation.

Pause the audio. Click on > icon. Pause the audio when done.

Pause the tutorial video and transcribe the remaining segments.

Click on Options, Annotation Mode. I have also done the same.

Let’s go back to Annotation Mode.

Cursor shows the annotations. Notice the annotated sentences in the English tier.
Click on File, Save. Click on File, Save to save the project.

If you wish to save with a different name, use the Save As option.

Click on File, Exit. Choose File, Exit to close ELAN.
