00:00:01 Hello and welcome to the spoken tutorial on Printer Connection.
00:00:06 In this tutorial, we will learn to connect a printer to a computer.
00:00:11 For this tutorial, I'm using
00:00:13 Ubuntu Linux 12.10 OS
00:00:17 and Cannon printer
00:00:20 Let me quickly introduce you to the various components of a computer.
00:00:25 This is the CPU
00:00:27 Monitor
00:00:29 Keyboard
00:00:30 Mouse
00:00:32 and Printer
00:00:34 Let's look at the CPU.
00:00:41 In most of the CPUs, there are some USB ports in the front
00:00:46 and some at the back.
00:00:49 Now, let's have a look at our printer.
00:00:53 Usually there is a power switch on the front or top part of the printer.
00:01:00 And there is a power slot and a USB port at the back of the printer.
00:01:11 To connect a printer to a computer, we have to use a USB cable.
00:01:16 Let's connect the USB cable to the printer.
00:01:22 Now let's connect the other end of the cable, to the CPU's USB port.
00:01:30 Now, our printer is connected to the computer.
00:01:33 Switch on the power button on the printer.
00:01:37 Now, let's configure the printer using our computer.
00:01:43 Let's go to the Desktop.
00:01:46 Click on the Dash Home icon, at the top left hand side of the launcher bar.
00:01:53 In the Search bar, type Printing
00:01:58 The printer icon will be displayed.
00:02:02 Click on it.
00:02:04 In older versions of Ubuntu, click on
00:02:07 System
00:02:08 Administration
00:02:09 and Printing.
00:02:12 Now, the Printing dialog box appears.
00:02:16 It says - There are no printers configured yet.
00:02:21 At the top left corner, there is a button named Add, with a green Plus sign on it. Click on it.
00:02:30 It will open the New Printer dialog box.
00:02:34 On the left hand side, a list of printer devices connected to the computer, is displayed.
00:02:42 Here, let's select our printer, i.e., Cannon Printer and click on Forward.
00:02:51 Then it will automatically begin searching for drivers. I will click on Cancel.
00:02:59 Now, the dialog box switches to the Choose Driver option.
00:03:04 The Default option will work in most cases.
00:03:08 Since, I have a Canon Printer, hence in this list, it is selected by default.
00:03:16 Now click on Forward.
00:03:19 In the Model page, my printer model is automatically detected.
00:03:26 It is indicated as Recommended, in brackets.
00:03:31 Also in the Drivers section, it shows the driver suitable for my printer.
00:03:38 Now, click on Forward again.
00:03:42 Now, we are prompted to describe our printer - printer name and its location.
00:03:49 I will keep it as Default and click on Apply.
00:03:53 Our printer is successfully added to our computer.
00:04:00 A message appears “Would you like to print a test page?”
00:04:04 Let's click on Print Test Page option.
00:04:08 A pop up will appear with a a message
00:04:12 “Submitted – Test Page submitted as...” job and its number.
00:04:18 Click on OK.
00:04:20 Again click OK in the Printer Properties dialog box.
00:04:24 Here is our test print from our printer.
00:04:29 Our printer is now ready to print our documents.
00:04:34 Let's close the Printer dialog box.
00:04:37 Let me quickly demonstrate how to print a document.
00:04:42 Let's open a document.
00:04:45 Then, press the keys Ctrl and P together.
00:04:49 The Print dialog box appears.
00:04:53 Notice that the connected printer is selected by default.
00:04:58 In this dialog box, we have several options.
00:05:03 Range allows us to select the range of pages that we want to print.
00:05:08 There are some options available under Range.
00:05:12 All pages option prints all the pages in the document.
00:05:16 Current page option prints only the current selected page.
00:05:22 Pages option prints the pages according to our specification, say for example, 3-4.
00:05:31 Next, let's look at the options available under Copies.
00:05:36 Copies option is where we choose the no. of copies that we want to print.
00:05:42 If we change Copies to 2, then 2 copies of the selected pages will be printed.
00:05:49 And click on the Print button.
00:05:52 If you have configured your printer correctly, your document will started printing.
