Time Narration
00:01 Welcome to the Spoken tutorial on LibreOffice Writer – Typing the text and basic formatting.
00:07 In this tutorial, we will learn the following:
00:10 Aligning Text in Writer
00:12 Bullets and Numbering
00:14 Cut, Copy and Paste options in Writer
00:18 Bold, Underline and Italic options
00:21 Font name, Font size, Font color in Writer.
00:26 Applying these features in the documents make them more attractive and much easier to read as compared to the documents which are in plain text.
00:36 Here we are using GNU Linux as our operating system and LibreOffice Suite version 3.3.4.
00:47 We will first learn about Aligning Text in Writer.
00:50 You can open a new document of your choice in Writer and implement these features.
00:57 Since we have already created a file with the filename "resume.odt" in the last tutorial, we will open this file .
01:08 We had previously typed the word "RESUME" and aligned it to the center of the page.
01:14 So, let's select the word and click on Align Left. You will see that the word "RESUME" is left-aligned, meaning, it is towards the left margin of the document.
01:25 If we click on Align Right, you will see that the word "RESUME" is now aligned to the right of the page.
01:32 If we click on Justify, you will see that the word "RESUME" is now aligned such that the text is uniformly placed between the right and left margins of the page.
01:44 This feature is more obvious when you have a line or paragraph of text.
01:51 Let's undo this.
01:54 Bullets and Numbering are used when independent points have to be written.
01:58 Each point starts with a bullet or a number.
02:02 This way one can distinguish between different points written in the document.
02:07 This is accessed by first clicking on the Format option in the menu bar and then clicking on Bullets and Numbering.
02:15 The dialog-box which you see after clicking on Bullets and Numbering option, provides you various styles under different tabs which you can apply on your document.
02:26 Numbering is done in the same way by selecting the Numbering option and every line will start with a new number.
02:34 So, let us click on the second style under the Numbering type style.
02:40 Now, click on the OK button.
02:42 You are now ready to type your first statement.
02:46 Let us type here "NAME: RAMESH".
02:50 Now, press the Enter key on the keyboard. Whenever you press the Enter key after typing a statement, you will see that a new bullet point or a new incremental number is created.
03:05 There can be bullets within bullets as well as numbers within numbers depending upon the type of format you choose.
03:13 So, we type the second statement in the resume as "FATHER’S NAME" colon "MAHESH".
03:20 Again, press the Enter key and type "MOTHER’S NAME" colon "SHWETA".
03:27 Similarly, we type "FATHERS OCCUPATION" colon "GOVERNMENT SERVANT" and "MOTHERS OCCUPATION" colon "HOUSEWIFE" as different points.
03:39 You can use Tab and shift tab keys to increase and decrease the indent for the bullets respectively.
03:47 In order to turn off the Bullets and Numbering option, first place the cursor next to the word "HOUSEWIFE" and click on the Enter key first and then click on the Numbering Off option in the Bullets and Numbering dialog-box.
04:03 You see that the bullet style is no longer available for the new text which you will type.
04:10 Notice that we have typed the word "NAME" twice in our document.
04:14 Instead of typing the same text all over again, we can use the Copy and Paste option in Writer.
04:21 So, let us learn how to do this.
04:24 Now we delete the word "NAME" from the text "MOTHER’S NAME" and rewrite the word "NAME" using Copy and Paste options.
04:33 In the text "FATHER’S NAME", first select the word "NAME" by dragging the cursor along the word "NAME".
04:40 Now, right-click on the mouse and click on the Copy option.
04:45 Place the cursor after the word "MOTHER’S".
04:48 Again right-click on the mouse and click on the Paste option.
04:54 We see that the word "NAME" gets pasted automatically.
04:57 There are shortcut keys available for these options as well - Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste.
05:08 This feature is very useful while writing a large amount of similar text in documents where you don’t need to write the entire text repeatedly.
05:19 You can also use the Cut and Paste feature in order to move a text from one place to another in the document.
05:26 Now, let us see how to do so.
05:29 Let us first delete the word "NAME" after the word "MOTHER’S".
05:34 In order to cut and paste this word, first select the word "NAME" in the statement "FATHER'S NAME".
05:40 Right-click on the mouse and then click on the Cut option. Notice that the word "NAME" is no longer there, next to the word "FATHER'S", which means it has been cut or deleted.
05:54 Now, place the cursor after the word "MOTHER’S" and right-click on the mouse.
05:59 Click on the Paste option.
06:02 You see that the word is now pasted here, next to the word "MOTHER'S".
06:07 The shortcut key to Cut is - Ctrl+X.
06:11 Hence, the only difference between copying and cutting the text is that the Copy option keeps the original word at its place from where it was copied whereas the Cut option removes it completely from its original place.
06:27 Let's paste the word "NAME" next to Father’s as well and continue.
06:31 Let's type a new heading as "EDUCATION DETAILS".
06:35 After learning about Bullets and Numbering in Writer, we will now learn how the Font name and the Font size of any text can be changed or applied.
06:45 Now, in the Format tool bar, at the top, we have a field named Font Name.
06:52 The font name is usually set as "Liberation Serif", by default.
06:57 Font Name is used to select and change the type of font you wish to type your text in.
07:04 For example, let us give the heading- "Education Details" a different font style and font-size.
07:11 So, first select the text "Education details". Then click on the down-arrow in the Font Name field.
07:19 You see a wide variety of font-name options in the drop-down menu.
07:25 Search for "Liberation Sans" and simply click on it.
07:29 You see that the font of the selected text changes.
07:34 Beside the Font Name field, we have the Font Size field.
07:38 As the name suggests, Font Size is used to increase or decrease the size of either the selected text or sets the size of the font of the new text which you wish to type.
07:52 So, we first select the text "EDUCATION DETAILS".
07:55 The font-size shown currently is 12.
07:58 Now, click on the down-arrow in the Font Size field and then click on 11.
08:05 You see that the font-size of the text decreases.
08:09 The font-size can be increased in the same way.
08:13 After learning about the font-size, we will see how to change the font-color in Writer.
08:21 The Font Color is used to select the color of the text in which your document or a few lines are typed.
08:27 For example, let us color the heading "EDUCATION DETAILS".
08:32 So, again select the text "EDUCATION DETAILS".
08:36 Now, click on the down-arrow in the Font Color option in the toolbar and then click on the light-green box for applying the light-green colour to the the text.
08:48 So, you see that the heading is now green in color.
08:52 Next to the font size option, you will see three options namely Bold, Italic and Underline.
09:00 As the names suggest, these will make your text either Bold or Italic or underlined.
09:07 So, first select the heading "EDUCATION DETAILS".
09:11 Now, click on the Bold icon to make the text Bold.
09:15 You see that the selected text becomes Bold.
09:19 Similarly, if you click on the Italic icon, it converts the text to Italic.
09:26 Clicking on the Underline icon, will underline your text.
09:31 You see that the selected text is now underlined.
09:35 In order to keep the heading Bold and underlined, deselect the Italic option by clicking on it again and keep the other two options selected.
09:45 Hence the heading is now Bold as well as underlined.
09:50 This brings us to the end of the spoken tutorial on LibreOffice Writer.
09:55 To summarize, we learned about:
09:57 Aligning Text in Writer
10:00 Bullets and Numbering.
