Opening Slide Welcome to the Spoken Tutorial on “Special Effects on Text” using Inkscape.



Learning Objectives (Slide) In this tutorial we will learn to create


  • Reflected text
  • Labeled text



System requirement (Slide) To record this tutorial, I am using
  • Ubuntu Linux 12.04 OS
  • Inkscape version 0.48.4



Open Inkscape Let us open Inkscape.


First, let us create a reflected text.

Type “SPOKEN” Type the word “SPOKEN”.


Change the size to 40. Make it Bold.



Change the color to red >>

Fill and Stroke

Go to Object menu. Select Fill and Stroke.



Click on Linear gradient >> Change color to red and black Click on Linear gradient.


Under Fill tab, click on Linear gradient.


Change the gradient color to red and black.

Align the gradient in vertical manner Align the gradient in vertical manner.


Thus the gradient should be red at the top and black at the bottom.



Selector tool >> Press Ctrl + D Click on Selector tool. Press Ctrl + D to duplicate the text.



Press V Press V to flip the duplicated text.


You can use the option available on the Tool controls bar.



Move the duplicated text Move the duplicated text below the original text in a mirror way.



Select Gradient tool >> bottom gradient handle Now select the Gradient tool.


Click on the bottom gradient handle.



Fill and Stroke >> change Alpha to 0 >> On the Fill and Stroke, change the Alpha value to 0.


Move the bottom handle little up.



Reduce the opacity to 80 Click on the Selector tool.


Reduce the opacity to 80.

Point to the text Observe a reflected text is formed.

Next, let us create a labeled text.



Create a teal color rectangle Create a rectangle in blue color. Make the Alpha value to 255.



Type “SPOKEN TUTORIAL”

Make it Bold

Type “SPOKEN TUTORIAL” on the rectangle. Change the Font size to 40.


Make the it Bold.



Click on Selector tool >>

Press Ctrl + D

Click on Selector tool.


Press Ctrl + D to duplicate the text.



Change text color to white Change the text color to white.



Go to Path >> Object to path Go to Path menu and click on Object to path.



Go to Object >> Ungroup Now go to Object menu and click on Ungroup.



Go to Path >> Union Go to Path menu and click on Union.



Click on Lower selection one step On the Tool controls bar click on Lower selection one step icon.



Go to Path >> Linked offset Now go to Path menu and click on Linked offset.



Click on the white dot and drag Click on the handle on the text and drag it to make the outline bigger.



Click on Selector tool

Click on outline part and move

Click Selector tool.


Then click on the outline part and move it down.



Click on Nodes tool Click on Nodes tool.


Now you can see the nodes on the outline.



Click on Selected object to path tool. On the Tool controls bar, click on Convert selected object to path tool.
Delete the unwanted parts Now select the unwanted nodes in the middle and delete them.



Select the outline part Click on the Selector tool again and keep the outline back to the same position.



Select text and change color to Teal Now select the text. Change the color to blue.
Press Ctrl + D

Change the color to black

Select the outline part and press Ctrl + D to duplicate it.


Change the color to black.



Go to Path >> Path Effect Editor Go to Path menu and click on Path Effect Editor.
Select Envelop Deformation in the Apply new effect drop down.

Click on Add

Now click on the Apply new effect drop down and select Envelope Deformation.


Then click on Add button.



Click on Lower selection one step icon three times. Now on the Tool controls bar, click on Lower selection one step icon three times.



Select the black part of outline

Make blur to 4, opacity to 60

Increase the blur to 4 and decrease the opacity to 60.



Next let us make a hang for the label.
Click on Ellipse tool


Draw a circle.

Click on Ellipse tool to make hole on the label.


Press Ctrl key and draw a circle on the top left of the rectangle.



Press Ctrl + D

Move the circle to another end

Press Ctrl + D to duplicate the circle.


Click on Selector tool and move the circle to the another end of the rectanlge.

Create thread using Bezier tool Next, click on the Bezier tool. Draw a curvy line.


It should look like a thread



Now our labeled text is ready.
