Show slide number 1 Hello Everybody. Welcome to the Geogebra tutorial on Basics of Spreadsheets

To get started with Geogebra, I am using the GNU/Linux operating system Ubuntu Version 10.04 LTS and Geogebra Version 3.2.40.0


The objective of this tutorial is see how to use the Spreadsheet in Geogebra

(Lesson Outline)

In this tutorial we will use the spreadsheet to perform basic data representation and calculations. Use the data to construct a histogram.


We will also use the spreadsheet view to create recurring Geogebra objects like creating a set of 10 parallel lines.

(Lesson Activities)

First we will use these marks of 50 students in a 50 mark test. From and to class boundaries and frequency is available here. I am going to copy the frequency to the clipboard.
Switch to Geogebra Window Now to the geogebra window . First step is to make the spreadsheet view visible. Select menu item view, Check spreadsheet view.


The spreadsheet view appears. Now the first column A lets type in from class boundary. The second is for the To class boundary and the third is for the frequency. Now I have copied the frequency , let me paste it from the clipboard.


Now for the From and To values. Now I did not paste these because I will show you another feature of geogebra spreadsheets.


First I will start with 0, then 5 and 10

Select these two cells and then drag the blue square on the right here all the way down, notice an arithmetic progression is created. Similarly if I select these two cells.


Let us create the class boundary list and the frequency list. To do that select the column B here. Right Click and say create List. L_1 is created.


We just have to modify this by clicking on object properties here and adding the first value zero appears here and press close. Now for the frequency list do the same thing. Select the frequency and right click list


I have the L_2 which is the frequency list.

To create the histogram , go to the input bar here. You can select from the commands or just type histogram here.


Now right here between the square brackets, if you press Enter it tells you the different options. One of the options is the list of class boundaries and list of raw data.


We can type in L_1 for the list of class boundaries and L_2 for the list of frequencies and press Enter. Notice that the histogram is created here.


Now to make the histogram more visible or readable , I will use the move drawing pad. And then I will right click on drawing pad properties here and change the distance to 5 which is the width of each bar and say close.Then I can zoom out. And again move the drawing pad.


Notice when I create a histogram, it creates this value a=250. a is the sum of the product of length and width of each bar

Now the next step is to create points and lines in the spreadsheet view to get a set of parallel lines to the Y axis
Geogebra Window – Spreadsheet View and Geogebra Objects I will take a new Geogebra window. Any command from the geogebra can be typed in a cell here.


First to create a point, you just have to give a point like this (1,2). Notice here a point with the name of the cell A1, column A row 1 the cell address with coordinates 1,2.


Similarly I can say 2,2 and I have A2 created. Now I will just select these two cells and drag the blue square all the way down here.


For this tutorial I will close the Algebra view for this tutorial. You will notice 10 points A1 to A10 are created.


Similarly in column B can create points 1,4 and 2,4 If I right click on object properties and show label. I can show label here again


I can once again select the two cells here, click on the blue square and drag it all the way down. I get a list of 10 points B1 to B10.


In the third column I can use a geogebra cells to create a segment. I can use the geogebra command segment here. I can use the cell address A1 and B1

I get the length of the segment 2 between A1 and B1.


Now I can just drag this column all the way down, I get 10 parallel lines.


One more thing to note here is if you go to options and Algebra. Right now you are seeing the value in the column C.


I can change it to command and it will show the command here.

(Assignment)

Now to the assignments , In the first assignment create a histogram using the following data: distance between home and school for a class of 35 students. I have the class boundaries and frequencies here

Use the spreadsheet view to represent the data

Create class boundary and Frequency lists

Use the input bar to create the histogram with the lists

Change the frequency and observe the change in the histogram

(Assignment 2)

Create concentric circles using the spreadsheet view

Draw a point A on the drawing pad to mark the centre of the circle

Use the spread sheet to create a column A of Radii

Use column B of the spreadsheet to create the circles with centre A

and radius from Column A

Move the Centre point A and observe

Switch to Geogebra File ConcentricCircles.ggb In the second assignment observe what happens when the centre point is moved.
