00:01 Hello everyone. Welcome to this tutorial on Overview of GChemPaint.
00:07 In this tutorial, we will learn to:
00:10 Install GChemPaint along with all its utility files.
00:15 View menubar of GChemPaint and its utility softwares.
00:20 Use GChemPaint User Manual.
00:23 *Use different GChemPaint utility softwares.
00:27 We will also see the relation between GChemPaint and Jmol Application.
00:33 Take a quick look at various structures that can be drawn using GChemPaint.
00:39 For this tutorial, I am using:
00:41 Ubuntu Linux OS version 12.04.
00:45 GChemPaint version 0.12.10.
00:50 GChemCalc version 0.12.10.
00:55 GChem3D version 0.12.10.
01:00 GChemTable version 0.12.10.
01:05 Jmol Application version 12.2.2.
01:10 To practice this tutorial, you will require
01:13 knowledge of high school Chemistry and
01:15 internet connectivity.
01:19 Let's see what is GChemPaint.
01:22 GChemPaint is a 2D chemical structure editor for Gnome-2 desktop.
01:28 It has GChemCalc, GChem3D and GChemTable as its utility features.
01:35 GChemPaint is available only on Linux OS.
01:39 GChemPaint is included in the Gnome Chemistry Utils.
01:44 GChemPaint and all its utility files can be installed on Ubuntu Linux OS using Synaptic Package Manager.
01:53 For more information on Synaptic Package Manager
01:56 please refer to the Linux series on our website.
02:02 Please check the following utilities in the Synaptic Package Manager window.
02:07 gchempaint,
02:09 libgcu0,
02:11 gcu-plugin,
02:13 libgcu-dbg,
02:16 gcu-bin.
02:19 Now we will move on to the User Manual.
02:22 User Manual briefly explains how to use GChemPaint and its utilities.
02:28 GChemPaint provides User Manual at this link.http://gchemutils.nongnu.org/paint/manual/index.html
02:34 The menubars of GChemPaint and all its utilities will appear on the Ubuntu Desktop menubar.
02:43 This is the tool box of GChemPaint.
02:46 We will use various tools to draw different structures.
02:51 Tool box has an inbuilt Periodic Table to replace the Current element.
02:57 Here are different structures drawn using the various tools in the tool box.
03:03 During the course of the series, I will explain how to draw various structures using these tools.
03:10 Now I will discuss about the utility software of GChemPaint.
03:15 This is Chemical Calculator window.
03:19 I will type “C3H8” in the search bar and press Enter.
03:25 This window shows details and Isotopic pattern of Propane.
03:32 This is GChem3D window.
03:35 It shows 3D models of 2D structures drawn in GChemPaint.
03:41 The new version of GChemPaint has improved 3D rendering of the molecules.
03:47 This is GChemTable window.
03:49 It has Periodic Table of elements and their trends.
03:54 There is one more unique feature in GChemPaint.
03:58 2D structures drawn in GChemPaint can be viewed in Jmol Application as 3D structures.
04:06 To view structures in 3D, GChemPaint files have to be saved in .mol format.
04:21 A brief introduction to Jmol Application.
04:25 It is, Free and open source Molecular Viewer.
04:29 Used to create and view 3 dimensional models of chemical structures.
04:34 Used to view secondary structures of proteins and macromolecules.
04:40 For more details, please refer to the Jmol Application series on our website.
04:47 In the GChemPaint series, we will learn exciting features like -
04:52 Use Templates and Residues
04:56 Form molecules and bonds
05:01 Aromatic Molecular structures
05:06 Orbital overlap
05:10 Resonance Structures
05:14 View 3D Structures
05:18 View Periodic Table trends.
05:23 Let us summarize.
05:25 In this tutorial we have learnt to,
05:27 Install GChemPaint along with all it's utility files
05:32 View menubar of GChemPaint and its utility softwares
05:36 Use GChemPaint User Manual
05:39 Use GChemPaint utility softwares
05:43 And about the relation between GChemPaint and Jmol Application.
05:48 We also had a quick look at different structures that can be drawn in GChemPaint.
05:54 This video summarizes the Spoken Tutorial project.
