To follow this tutorial,
  • Learners must be familiar with the FreeCAD interface.

Open FreeCAD.


Click on Create new.

Open FreeCAD.


Click on Create new to start a new file.

Click on View and select Standard View.


Choose Axonometric from the menu and then select Isometric.

Click on View and select Standard View.


Choose Axonometric from the menu and then select Isometric.

Cursor on gizmo. Notice that the gizmo changes to isometric in the canvas.
Curson on Auto icon. Click on the Auto icon on the top.

It is the tool to select the current working plane.

Click on Top (XY) option. Notice the changes in the left side panel.


Click on the Top (XY) option.

For isometric drawing, the working plane must be the XY plane.

Isometric

Isometric view is a 2D representation of a 3D object aligned to 3 axes.
Create a rectangle and select it. Let’s draw a cube.

Select Property tab.


Change the Display mode to wireframe.

Go to the Property tab in the left panel.

Scroll down.


Enter 30 for both height and length.

Scroll down to the height and length form.


I will make this into a square of 30 x 30 mm in dimension.

Draw a line from one of the corners of the square for some length. Draw a line from one of the corners of the square for some length.
Select this line.

For length type 30 mm.

Select this line and change its length to 30 mm as before.
Cursor at the free end of the line and then on the cube. Next let’s make the top face of the cube from the existing face.
Select the rectangle object. First select the rectangle object, which has dimensions of a square.
Click on the Move tool.


Check the box for Copy.

Place it at the end of the line object, when you see the white dot.

Cursor on the cube that is being constructed. Create the remaining edges of the cube by joining the edges as seen.

Move cursor to the bottom face corner.

Snap line to corner (white sign), click to set the line.

Then move to the bottom face corner, and snap the line to the corner.


When you see the white sign click to set the line.

Next let’s make a cylinder.
Click on the circle tool.

Draw a circle on the canvas.

Select the circle.

Uncheck the box for Filled in the left panel.

Click on the circle tool, and draw a circle on the canvas.


Select the circle and uncheck the box for Filled in the left panel.

Type a radius of 30 mm and press the Enter key. Type a radius of 30 mm and press the Enter key.
Cursor on the circle. Notice that the circle appears as an ellipse in the isometric view.

Click on the line tool. Click on the line tool again.
Draw a line from the center of the circle to upward direction. Draw a line from the center of the circle to upwards.
Scroll down to the length form.


In the property tab in data panel.

Type 90 for length and press the Enter key. Type 90 for the length of the cylinder and press the Enter key.
Go to Draw style pulldown in the object style section.


Change the line type to dashdot from the menu.

Now select the circle and click on the move tool.


Check the copy checkbox, click on circle, hold, move and place it on top.

Observe the white dot sign of the snap tool at the set position.

Enable the snap angle tool. Enable the snap angle tool next.
Choose the line tool.


Draw a line from the top face to the bottom face of the cylinder.

Choose the line tool.


Draw a line from the top face to the bottom face of the cylinder.

Draw one more line between the two circles. Do this to form 2 projectors for the cylinder as seen.
Move mouse scroll to pan on the canvas. You may not have sufficient space on the screen.
Show pan and create space on the canvas. Place the cursor on the canvas and use the scroll wheel to pan on the canvas.
Click on Circle tool.


Click on Edit, box selection.

Next let’s draw a cone.


Click on Edit in the top menu and choose box selection.

Move the cursor to the canvas.


Click and hold the left mouse and select all parts of the cylinder.

Move the cursor to the canvas and notice the small selection box.


Click and hold the left mouse and select all parts of the cylinder.

All the entities for cylinder are selected. Notice that 5 entities are checked in the left hand panel and in the canvas.
Click on the move tool and check the box for Copy. Click on the move tool and check the box for Copy.
Drag out a copy of the entities together in the canvas. Drag out a copy of the entities together in the canvas.
Select and delete the top face and the 2 side projector lines. Select and delete the top face and the 2 side projector lines.
Enable the snap angle tool.


Then click on the line tool.

From the top of the 90 mm line, draw a projector line to the circle. From the top of the 90 mm line, draw a projector line to the circle.

Click on the ellipse tool. Next let’s draw an ellipse.


Click on the ellipse tool.

Move the cursor to the canvas, click hold and drag to draw ellipse. Move the cursor to the canvas, click hold and drag.


Now the ellipse may look like a rectangle to the human eye.

Type 50 in the form for Dx, press the tab key and type 60 for Dy.


Press the Enter key.

In the left hand panel, change the values for delta x(Dx) and delta y(Dy).


Type 50 in the form for delta x(Dx), press the tab key and type 60 for delta y(Dy).


Press the Enter key.

Press the Enter key. The value for delta z(Dz) gets highlighted.


We will leave the delta z(Dz) as is at 0 mm and press the Enter key.


Notice the ellipse on the screen.

Click on Edit, box selection and select the cone. Now do a box selection for the entities in the cone.

That is I am selecting all the entities that make up the cone.

Cursor on any name of the selected entities in left panel.


Right click to open the context menu and select utilities.

Move the cursor to the multiple selected objects on the left panel.


Right click to open the context menu and select utilities.

Select Add a named group option.


Type cone in Add a group dialog box.

Select Add a named group option.

Dialog box opens.

Add a group dialog box appears.


I will type cone for the new name.

Cursor on cone.


Click on the arrow to show the objects under the cone.

A new group named cone appears.


Click open the tree view for cone and notice all the selected objects under it.

Cursor on canvas. Next, let’s learn to export our drawings to user friendly formats.
Select the cylinder using box selection method. First select the objects that we want to export.


I will select the cylinder using box selection.

Click on File, Export and a dialog box opens. Click on File, Export and a dialog box opens.
Click on type of file pulldown.

Scroll to show the various options.


Cursor on amf, 3mf, Autodesk options.

Choose the type of file first. Click on it.

Notice a wide variety of options.


amf and 3mf denotes 3D and additive manufacturing formats.


The Autodesk DWG 2D format is for exporting in autocad format.

Cursor on png, svg, pdf options. Formats such as images and pdfs are also available for the choice of users.
Cursor on file name, path and Save option. Give a file name and path of your choice and click on export to save the file.


Pause the video, choose options of your choice and practice exporting.

Click on cancel for now. I will click on cancel for now.
Save your work if desired and exit FreeCAD.
