Welcome to the tutorial on Basic Orthographic Drawing.

To record this tutorial, I am using


  • Windows 11 OS and
  • FreeCAD v0.21.1

To follow this tutorial,
  • Learners must be familiar with the FreeCAD interface.
  • For pre-requisite tutorials, please visit this site.


Open the FreeCAD interface. I have opened the FreeCAD interface.
Click on File, New. To create a new exercise, click on File, New.
Cursor on Workbench.

For the workbench option, select Draft workbench.

The Workbench option on the top shows start.


In the menu option on top, select Draft workbench.

Show the changed interface. The interface menu options change.
Go to View, Toolbars in the menu. Go to View then Toolbars in the menu.
Cursor on the options. Uncheck and check a box. Make sure that all the tool bar options are enabled in the list.


If any option is not enabled click on the left side to enable it as seen.

Cursor on Macro. Macro option allows the user to write and install own features.
Cursor on the top menu.


Left click, hold and drag the menu bars on the top.

All menu buttons may not be seen on the top as in the video.


If so, drag and rearrange them to make them visible for future use.

Click on Edit, Preferences. Now click on Edit, Preferences.
Preferences window opens. Preferences window opens.
Click on the General tab. Go to the General tab.


Ensure that the styles are appropriately selected .

Click on General tab.

Cursor on the Units tab.

Now choose the units tab.
For the unit system, choose Standard. From here you can change the unit system that you desire.

For the unit system, I will choose Standard.

Cursor on number of decimals and the default value. I will keep the number of decimals as 2.


You may change this later on.

Click on the Draft tab on the left side panel at the bottom. Next, click on the Draft option on the left side panel.
Go to General setting tab.


For Default working plane, select XY top.

In the General setting tab, make sure the default working plane is selected.


I will select XY top.


We can also select this view using the gizmo on the interface as seen here.

The yellow colored menu tools are Draft creation tools. Internal precision level can be changed based on user preference.


I will leave it as is for now.

Click on Grid and snapping tab. Now go to Grid and snapping tab.
Uncheck first 4 (Use grid, Always use grid, show grid border, show human figure). I will uncheck the Grid options as seen here for ease of drawing later on.
Click on Apply and then on Ok. Click on Apply to accept the changes and then on OK to close the window.
Click on View >> Panels.


Make sure Report View and Combo view

Now click on View, then on Panels.


Make sure Report View and Combo view are checked or selected.

Cursor on the Model panel at the bottom. Model shows the tools used during drawing.
Cursor on Property View window. The Property View window shows the properties of the object that can be changed.
Click on the cube.

Click on the cube or the gizmo icon as seen.


The drop down prompts the user to make 2D, 3D or another selection.

Cursor on orthographic and isometric. Select orthographic or isometric as desired.


Orthographic gives 2D drawing and isometric is projection of 3D drawing.

Select orhographic. For now I will select Orthographic.

I will also select top view.


These can also be accessed from the View menu on the top.

Click on the Snap ortho icon.

First click on the Snap ortho tool.


When the snap tool is enabled the icon background changes to cyan color.

Cursor on Draft creation tools. Now let’s draw a Line on the canvas.
Cursor on the tooltips of snap tool icons. Snap tools aid the user in selecting specific points on an object.


They can be start point, end point, mid point, intersection or perpendicular.

Click to enable/disable Lock icon. Make sure that the Lock icon is disabled.

Highlight Report view while editing.

Now the Report view panel prompts the user to pick the first point.
Click on the Line icon. The options in the Draft creation tools can be used to choose Line.

Move the cursor to the canvas on the drawing area.

Notice the changes on the panels on the left side when we click on the line tool.
Left click on the canvas, hold and drag to draw a line.


Point to the Combo view panel on the left panel.

Left click on the canvas, hold and drag to draw a line as desired.


Click again to end the line.


You can change the length of the line from the task tab in the Combo View panel.

Highlight x change in combo view during At this time notice the coordinates on Combo View change.


Since this is a horizontal line, only x coordinate changes.

Cursor on the combo view x dimension. The exact dimension of the line can also be specified here.


You may pause the video and do the following.

Cursor on the combo view x dimension. Add another line by giving x coordinate dimension as 100 mm.
Highlight the blue + sign in video editing. Notice a blue small + sign, which indicates that the snap ortho is on.


It aids in drawing a horizontal or vertical line.

Let’s draw another line which will snap to the end of the first line.
Cursor on the Endpoint and Midpoint icons. Next enable the Endpoint and Midpoint icons in snap tools.
Place the cursor close to the end of the first line. Now place the cursor close to the end of the first line.


Notice the white dot at the end of the line.

Cursor at the end of the line. Now the snap tool will snap the new line to this point.
Click on File, save. To save the file, click on File, Save.

Highlight the green outline on the selected object at editing.

Now two line objects can be seen in the list.

To select an object click on it and notice the green outline.


We can also select an object from the Combo View.

Cursor on Draft modification tool. Next, we will use Draft modification tools.
Select line.


Click on the 4 direction arrow.

To move the object, first click on the 4 direction arrow.
Cursor in combo view panel. drag down a little to see during recording. Highlight at editing.


Click on the line.

Many parameters can be tracked during the move in the combo view panel.


First click on the object and move the mouse to the new location.

Left click again. Left click again to the desired location, to move the object.
Select the line in the combo view window.


Click on Edit, duplicate selection.

To make a copy of an object, first select it.

Click on the check box for Copy.

Cursor on the new line object name and select it. Notice the duplicated object name appears on the combo view panel.


The new object is superimposed on the parent and is indistinguishable.

Click on the move icon, place the cursor on the line.


Move the cursor to move the new object and left click to set the new location.

Now select it and click on the Move tool.


Then, place the cursor on the object and move it to the desired location.

Click on File, save or press Ctrl+S to save the file.


Use File, Exit to close FreeCAD.

Save your work as needed.
