In this tutorial, we will look at logo and sidebar available on the Main page.

Open Internet Explorer/ Mozilla Firefox.Go to http://enhanceedu.iiit.ac.in/mediawiki_sandbox. Let's get to work. Open Internet Explorer/Mozilla Firefox or any other browser. In the address bar, type in http://enhanceedu.iiit.ac.in/mediawiki_sandbox

Roll the cursor to the left edge of the page showing logo, navigation and search and toolbox

In this particular tutorial we look in to the logo and side bar which has navigation and search and in the next tutorial we will discuss about toolbox. we will go one by one and explain briefly.
Show logo(roll the cursor to the logo at the top left corner of the page) Lets first take a look at the logo.You can see the logo at the top left corner of the wiki page. Clicking on the logo brings the user to the main page of the wiki.
click on the "help" link in the navigation box, this will redirect to special page. Lets check by clicking on one of the link say "help" in navigation. You are in the special page, "Help" now.
click on the logo in the "help" page will redirect to main page Now click on the logo you will be redirected to the main page of the wiki. Look you are in the main page of the wiki. The site administrator can add logo to the wiki. We will discuss in detail about how to add logo in the advanced MediaWiki tutorials.
Show the sidebar(roll the cursor to the left edge of the wiki page over navigation, search and toolbox) Now we will talk about Sidebar gives access to the important links in the wiki.

you can see three section in the sidebar. Navigation, Search and Toolbox. Lets discuss in brief about each section.

you can see the navigation box with the following links.

Click on the Main page link in the Navigation Now we check the Main page link by Clicking on it. This link redirects user to the opening page/front page of the wiki that is main page. Here you don't find difference because you are already in the main page.
Click on the Community portal link in the Navigation box Now we will look at Community Portal which is one of important features of MediaWiki. You can write what tasks need to be done, what groups there are to join, and share news about recent events or current activities taking place on Wikipedia.
Click on the Current Events link in the Navigation box Now we will look at Current Events link by click on it. You can write significant, usually considered "newsworthy", events which are occurring in the contemporary timeframe.
Click on Recent changes link.This will redirect to the special page(with some edits done by the users).Point the cursor to user,talk, contribution and time stamp in the recent changes page Now we will look at Recent changes which is one of the important feature of mediawiki. Clicking on the Recent changes link redirects user to the special page which is automatically generated by the MediaWiki where you can see the edits done by the users either as a contribution to the wiki or talk in a discussion page along with corresponding time stamps etc.
Point the cursor to the special page tab at the left top corner of the page, next to the logo Lets see whats in their by clicking on it, you can see click on the recent changes directs to the special page. As you can see at the left top corner of the page, next to the logo you can see special page tab, meaning it is the special page generated automatically by the Mediawiki.
point the cursor on the (diff) and (his) links. You can see the changes done in the wiki categorized under date wise. In each of the change, you will see two link (diff) and (his).
click on the (diff) link , redirects to user revision page. move to cursor to the last two comparisons.click back in the browser lets click on (diff) you can see comparison of last two edits.
click on (his) link, redirects to revision history of the user. roll the cursor to (cur), (pre) and (undo) links click on the (his) link you can see revision history of the user. The user can revert back to the previous version by click on the "undo" link at the end of each revision.
Click on Help link. Now we will look at Help link by clicking on it. You can write what you consider as helpful for the site in this wiki page.

Click on Random Pages link. You will see a randomly selected page

Clicking on the random page link will get a randomly selected page from the existing wiki pages. This page is randomly selected by the MediaWiki. click on random pages link, click on random page once again. you can observe both the pages are not the same unless there are no pages in the wiki.

In the left edge centre of your page, you can see a search box with search field and two buttons labeled "Go" and "Search". Point on the Search Box.

Now let's discuss about the search box. The quickest way to find information in MediaWiki is to search.Search is used to look up wiki pages that contain the search keyword(it is what the user enters in the search field)

Lets see What links here tool. Clicking on the link takes to a special page that lists the pages on this wiki which contains a link to the current page. Lets check by clicking on the links. You can see "No pages link to Main Page" as this is the fresh copy of wiki, no pages are added to the Main page. If any pages added to the main pages, list the pages. This feature is pretty much helpful when you are looking for pages of related information. By the way Special pages are pages that are created by the MediaWiki on demand to perform a specific function.

show (Roll the cursor to) Related changes The next link Related changes. When you click on Related changes tool, lists all the recent changes done in the pages which are linked to the current page.
show (Roll the cursor to) Special Pages Special pages tool lists the MediaWiki special pages. In MediaWiki terminology, a special page is one that presents information about the Wiki and allows access to administration activities for the wiki.
Click on Special pages redirects to the special pages page and roll the cursor and point the different sections in the special page. Lets see Special pages by clicking on the link. You can see all the special pages in this page, separated under different sections which helps the administer to easy to administer the wiki. These special pages are commonly generated when the special page is loaded rather than being stored in the wiki database.

Show the Printable version by rolling the cursor Printable version tool help the user generate printer-friendly format of wiki page.
Click on Printable version and it will redirect to the print version of the wiki page. Show the &printable=yes in the URL by point You can get a printable version of a page using the "Printable version" tool, or by adding the text "&printable=yes" to the URL,

click on the Permanent link in the toolbox Now, we will look at Permanent link. A permanent link, is a URL that points to a specific entry after it has passed from the front page to the archives. Because a permanent link remains unchanged indefinitely, it is less susceptible to changes

The page tabs are at the top of the page, right to the logo. You can see the tabs like

Lets discuss in brief about the these tabs. We will discuss in detail in advance tutorials.

Roll the cursor to the page tab The default active tab you are currently viewing is page tab in which you see the content of the page
Show the discussion tab Now lets discuss about discussion tab. As Mediawiki is a collaborative tool, the users can discuss as well as comment on the wiki page using discussion tab.
Click on the discussion tab will redirect to talk page. In talk page click on edit tab to post your comment. Hit "save page" button to save the comment. Lets see how to add a comment in discussion page. Now click on discussion tab. You can see it redirects Talk page for main page. Here you can post comment by clicking on edit tab beside discussion tab. Edit the comment what ever you like and hot save button at the bottom of the page. The comment gets saved.
Show the view source tab and click on it. Now we will discuss about view source tab. "view source" shows the source code of the wiki page. Lets click on the tab. You can see the source of the content in the wiki page. You cannot edit this source. If anonymous editing is enabled, users will see "Edit" in place of “view source” .
Show History tab Now lets discuss one of the very important feature of mediawiki that is "history" tab.
click on history tab redirect to the special page of history of edits Let’s click on history tab. As you can observe, there are list of revisions that are made on the wiki page.
Show the date,time and user who modified it. We can also see the date and time of modification and who modified it. It can be used as version control tool as you can always revert back to the previous version.
show the browse history section in history page and click on month drop down to show the months You can quickly check the revision by month and year using browse history option.
Show the compare selected revision and click on it. Show the compare result. You can also compare revisions by clicking on "Compare selected revisions" button. You can see the comparison for two revisions.

These are some of the other pages tabs which will be discussed in detail in later tutorials. But for now, we will quickly discuss what does what?. Lets discuss one by one.

  • Move
This Move tab is used to rename the page or to move the page from one level to another.

  • Watch
Once you find the page that you are interested in, you can use the watch feature to know the changes made in the page. If you want to add a page to your watch list click on the “watch” tab on the top of your page.

  • Unwatch
If the user wants to remove a particular page from his watch list, he/she can do that by clicking on Un watch tab.

  • Delete
Delete tab is used to delete a particular page from wiki. Usually this tab is enabled only to the administration until the admin give privileges to certain users.

The administrators can add or remove tabs according to the privileges.
